Supporting Ventura County Through the CalFresh Crisis

In the past two weeks, we’ve seen a 25% increase in neighbors seeking food assistance. This sharp rise comes as CalFresh (SNAP) benefits were delayed nationwide, leaving many families uncertain about how they’ll afford groceries this month.

Here’s how Food Share is responding:

  • We immediately purchased $1 million of food to meet the surge in demand.

  • We increased food distributions countywide, including large-scale events like our weekly College Park distribution in Oxnard.

  • We ramped up our 200-pantry network, ensuring our partners have more food to serve the increased number of families turning to them for help.

This government shutdown hasn’t just stalled hunger relief programs, it has pushed families to the edge.

Here in Ventura County, we saw the impact firsthand:

  • Seniors who’ve never needed help before.

  • Parents doing everything they can to stretch their paychecks.

  • Kids who don’t understand why parents aren’t eating with them.

Now, even as CalFresh benefits have been funded through November, the hardship continues as many families will struggle to recover.

At Food Share, we remain committed to responding regardless of the situation. But we can’t do it alone. Your support ensures we can continue to provide food across Ventura County to every neighbor in need.

How you can help today:

  1. Donate – Every $10 helps provide 30 meals for neighbors in need. Give now
  2. Volunteer – Lend a hand sorting, packing, or distributing food.  Sign up

Together, we can ensure Ventura County remains strong, supported, and fed—no matter the challenges still to come.

Thank you for being a partner at this critical moment.

With gratitude,

FAQs

What’s happening with CalFresh/SNAP benefits?

Because of the ongoing federal government shutdown, the federally-funded nutrition assistance program (CalFresh in California) is at risk of delayed payments beginning in November unless the shutdown is resolved. San Francisco Chronicle+1
In Ventura County, over 78,000 residents rely on CalFresh benefits. County of Ventura

Why does this matter to our local food bank and community?

When federal benefits are delayed or cut, families turn to local food banks for additional assistance. We expect significantly higher demand starting now and through the holiday season.

What is our food bank doing?

We have activated our surge plan:
• Increased food ordering and warehousing
• Extended hours of operations / additional shifts
• Mobile/drive-through distributions in underserved neighborhoods
• Coordination with state and partner agencies (including the California National Guard deployment) to scale support. ABC7 San Francisco+1
We are ready — but even the strongest preparation needs community support.

What do we need from the community?

Four key ways:

  1. Financial contributions — money allows us to purchase more food, respond fast, and flex where needed.
  2. Food donations — non-perishable, healthy pantry items; fresh produce if possible.
  3. Volunteers — more hands to sort, pack, and distribute food boxes.
  4. Awareness & advocacy — share our messaging, tell neighbors, help drive traffic to our website/links, raise awareness that demand is increasing.

What happens if we don’t ramp up support?

Without enhanced support, there is a real risk that families who lose CalFresh support will turn to us, overwhelming capacity — resulting in longer wait times, reduced portions, or, in worst case, unmet need. We are committed to avoiding that scenario, but it requires community mobilization.

Is this just temporary?

We hope the federal shutdown is resolved quickly and benefits resume. However, the disruption is projected to begin in early November and could last weeks or longer. Even short interruptions have long ripple effects. Our planning assumes higher demand for an extended period.

Are you coordinating with state/federal agencies?

Yes. The State of California has already announced deployment of the California National Guard and emergency funding support (approx. $80 million) to strengthen food banks statewide. Governor of California+1
We are working closely to leverage those resources and ensure local effectiveness.
